A Chinese Canton export ivory folding fan, mid to late 19th century, the ivory guards carved in relief with village scenes of figures, pavilions and trees, the fourteen similarly carved and pierced sticks alternating in tortoiseshell, sandalwood, mother-of-pearl, red and green stained ivory and natural ivory, supporting a paper panel, each side painted in gouache with continuous figural scenes, each figure with appliqué ivory facial detail and silk costume, length 28cm, within original fitted lacquer rectangular case with hinged lid, decorated in gilt with figures, fruit, flowers, butterflies and foliage on a dark brown ground.
