Indistinctly signed, Dutch School, Oil on canvas board, 'H N M S Jacob van Heemskerck Christmas 1941', Signed lower right and titled lower left. 8 x 10'' HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck was the second and last of the Tromp class destroyers, she was Royal Netherlands Navy named after Admiral Jacob Van Heemskerk (1567-1607), Commissioned on 10th May 1940 when Germany invaded The Netherlands; escaped to the UK, and under the auspices of the Royal Navy served as a protection ship on Atlantic convoys which is the role in which she was engaged when this painting was created.
