Mildred Nungester Wolfe (American/Mississippi, 1912-2009) , "Long Shadows on a Hazy Day", 1936, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 25 in. x 30 in., framed. Note: After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dixie Art Colony, and Art Students League of New York, Mildred Nungester earned her master’s degree from Colorado College in 1944. She then married fellow artist, Karl Wolfe, and returned to her native Jackson, Mississippi. The painting offered here gracefully juxtaposes light and shadow while effortlessly combining natural elements with the manmade. The muted palette perfectly captures the haze of a hot summer day in the Deep South.Ref.: Wolfe, Elizabeth, ed. Mildred Nungester Wolfe. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2005.
