SignedSadly I never got to know Ray, we demonstrated at many of the same events around the US over the years but it is always hard to find time to catch up with friends I already know between demos let alone find time to make new ones . Ray was also so well know before I even picked up a woodturning tool that I'm sure it was even harder for him! But I heard many stories from many people of his personable humour and I have always admired his skill as a woodturner and eye for good form.It is always an honour to be asked to work on a piece from a master's hand and I'm happy to have contributed to this project which not only keeps Ray's memory alive but also contributes to ongoing education in woodturning.With this piece I have finished the exterior keeping as true as possible to Ray's original form and applied my contemporary version of a traditional pattern from Maori culture which has always been an inspiration for me growing up in New Zealand. I applied this pattern in a simple band letting much of the beautiful wood grain show. The inside I left just as Ray turned it, showing all his tool marks.
