Stephen Hogbin (USA) reassembled ash hollow form 9x11cm. SignedRay and I met a few times in the 70’s. He was a craftsman with impeccable technique and an eye for forms from history. I was cutting up turnings to construct new forms. We were on separate paths. With this collaboration it is a pleasure to work these forms and ideas together. His work was impeccably traditional. He understood the technique and the form to produce perfect classic forms. Conversely people often asked me, “why would you cut up the turning?” I suspect Ray thought the same.I have enjoyed looking at the piece of Ray’s sent to me. It really does not need to be altered, changed, modified, revised, as it works well enough. My approach most of the time is to look for something new, if its startling so much the better. The shock value of cutting up classic forms is a bit lost now as many people have brought their imagination to the craft of woodturning. Back when we met tradition was a key word and now it is tradition and imagination. The form is wrestles slightly out of balance, it is alive. The Ray Key Collaboration Auction
