A SILVER AND GOLD INLAID BRONZE CENSER, KANGXI
China, early 18th century. Heavily cast as a fierce Buddhist lion playing with its cub, finely inlaid with silver wire and the eyes in gold, the four-lobed separately cast base standing on four brocade balls.
Provenance: Boston private collection.
Condition: Fine condition with few tiny nicks, good naturally grown patina, some old wear.
Weight: 3395.7 grams (all four pieces together)
Dimensions: 20 x 20 x 15 cm
Ingenuously cast in four separate pieces, one being an oval incense container hidden under the Buddhist Lion’s back, which can be removed and comfortably filled, the smoke from the incense dramatically escaping from the dogs open jaw. Also note the neatly inlaid brocade balls in silver wire on the top of the base.
Auction result comparison: Compare with another silver-inlaid Buddhist lion censer at Sotheby’s London, on May 16th, 2007, in Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, lot 112.
