PADMASAMBHAVA AND HIS TWO WIVES
Copper-bronze statue, Tibet, 16th-17th century. The tantric wizard and master of ritual magic is seated in dhyanasana on a stepped throne in front of a mandorla holding vajra, kapala and kathvanga. He is flanked by his two wives, the princess Mandarava, daughter of a local king, and dakini Yeshe Tsogyal, the wisdom lake queen and mother of Tibetan Buddhism.
Provenance: The Schulmann Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between 1960 and 1970. Josette and Théo Schulmann were passionate dealers of Asian Art and have donated several important works to the Cernuschi Museum.
Condition: Fine condition with extensive wear and traces of use, minor dents and losses The mandorla attached to the statue with old wire. Unsealed.
