A GILT BRONZE MAHAKALA, 18TH CENTURY
Tibeto-Chinese. The wrathful deity stands on a single lotus base with Kartika, Kapala, Vajra and Sword in his four hands, the four heads wearing elaborate skull tiaras, beneath flaming hair, the tiger fur, snake necklace and heavenly bands finely incised.
Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Popov in Novi Sad, Kingdom of Servia, acquired between 1900-1920. A copy of an old black and white photo, dating to early 1930s, with the collector’s cabinet, and the present statue within, is accompanying this lot.
Condition: Excellent condition with some wear and very minor nicks, the tip of one flame lost, minor traces of soldering at the vajra (could be original). Unsealed. Good patina.
