A pair of George III satinwood and polychrome painted pier cabinets, circa 1790, in the manner of Seddon, Shackleton & Sons, each moulded cornice above door comprising of a glazed upper section and a false panel cupboard door front to the bottom, opening to adjustable shelves, on squat square section tapering legs, each 169cm high, 70cm wide, 41cm deep Seddons were a vast London based firm at one point having over four hundred employees. They had commissions for Charles IV of Spain, Windsor Castle and various country houses including Hauteville House in Guernsey and Bridwell house in Dorset. The company traded under many different names but used Seddon, Son & Shackleton from 1788 to 1798. The combination of elegant painted decoration and satinwood used in these cabinets is reflective of the company’s output in this period. For example of this a bookcase attributed to Seddon, Son & Shackleton sold at Bonhams, London, New Bond Street, Fine English Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art, 12th June 2013, Lot 177 (£32,450).
