《金光明最胜王经》是一部对唐以后的佛教发展产生很大影响的佛经。在敦煌藏经洞和黑水城出土的佛经文献中约有三千多件，占有相当比例。在日本和蒙古，都极其推崇过《妙法莲华经》，《仁王般若经》等大乘佛经，而其中尤以特别信崇《金光明最胜王经》。早在七世纪始，《金光明最胜王经》汉译本在日本流传，后与上面提及的《妙法莲华经》和《仁王般若经》同被推崇为护国三部经，在全国的寺庙诵读。
