A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF THREE MUSHROOMS
Unsigned
Japan, probably Nagoya, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
A group of three mushrooms (take) of ascending size, their broad caps elegantly overlapping. The surface of the caps is smooth and beautifully stained. The underside carved with meticulous detail and an incredibly sense of naturalism, showing the stems and ribbed surface of the underside of the caps. Natural himotoshi. The quality of the carving could suggest a Nagoya artist, such as Tadatoshi.
HEIGHT 2.5 cm, LENGTH 4.5 cm
Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection.
Condition: Excellent condition.
Due to the phallic shape of mushrooms, they are often seen as erotic netsuke (shunga).
