Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including nine accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: U-2) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 31 x 27 mm. This has a round flat face and sides which rise to the base of an oval pierced handle. The design on the face is done in raised lines within an outer circle, and consists of a pattern of mostly curving lines around a kind of arrow-head . This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is a nice example of its kind. The metal is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, but is sound.'; T-278) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 28 x 34 mm. This has a flat oval face and a back which rises steeply to a stalk handle, on top of which is a pierced oval grip. The design on the face consists of an abstract pattern of curving lines. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1700 B.C. The top of the handle and the edges of the seal are worn, otherwise it is in good condition. The metal in sound.'; T-666) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 34 x 28 x 25 mm. This is roughly oval, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a stalk handle ending in a round loop. The design on the face consists of raised lines with a Greek cross in the middle and around it a circle of connected loops, one of which is placed between the edge and the cross. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The edges are worn but otherwise it is in good condition and has been cleaned.'; R-758) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 22 x 31 mm. This has originally a flat circular face, and the back rises sharply to an oval handle, pierced for suspension. The design is a linear motif with fillers around the edge. The motif consists of a central rhomb, from the top of which similar short strokes stretch th the edge. Crescents fill the upper spaces. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. The metal is in good condition and has been conserved, but the handle and the edges of the design are worn.'; R-217) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 29 x 28 x 26 mm. This is a roughly round disc, with stalk handle on the back surmounted with a pierced loop. The design is cut into the flat face and consists of lines, variously straight or curving, which form no particular pattern, and seem not to depict anything. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1600 B.C. The outer rim is damaged in a few places, but generally this is in good condition.'; D-29) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 29 x 28 x 26 mm. This has a round convex face and the back rises steeply to four ridges below the handle which is in the shape of a human clenched fist with thumb projecting on top, pierced with a portion of bronze wire still in the hole. The face shows a stylized sitting bird such as a peacock with wings spread each side of the head. Two dots are placed above the bird. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 1200-800 B.C. It is in very good condition.'; D-5) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 16 x 36 x 20.5 mm. This has a flat, compartmented openwork face in two parts, with a closed compartmented between, but on the back there is a handle with loop. One may suspect that two other sections originally existed which have now broken off and been lost. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. What is left is in very good condition and could be interpreted as two eyes with a nose between. However, the complete object may have excluded such an interpretation.'; D-1) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 30 x 30 x 19 mm. This is a round, with flat compartmented face and flat back with sloping edges and handle attached of a pierced piece of metal rod. The surface of the back is covered with fine linear hatching. The design is difficult to interpret, but may include a two-humped camel and above it a smaller horned quadruped. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is in very good condition.'; P-27) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20.5 x 22 x 20 mm. This has a flat round face, and a flat back on which is mounted a tall stalk handle ending in a pierced top of almost round shape. The design consists of four crescent-shaped lines beginning and ending on the edge. Three are smaller, one is larger overshadowing one of smaller ones. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. There is some heavy incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but generally the seal is in very good condition.' 310 grams total, 16-26mm (1/2 - 1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
