23rd-20th century BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals, some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (R-838) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 36 x 35.5 x 14mm. This is a round disc with bevelled edges and a handle of inverted U-shape on the back. The flat face has a compartmented design consisting of a central circle with scalloped edge divided into four quarters by two crossing lines. Each of these quarters is joined to the outer edge by three irregular shapes, each consisting of two joining shapes ending in scallops on the edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B,C. The metal and the piece are in good condition.'; (C-8) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 36 x 35 17 mm. This is round, compartmented, and partly open work. On the back there is a loop handle. The design consists of four main 'petals' meeting in the middle, and between them four smaller shapes are inserted. An outer band surrounds the whole. This is a seal from west central; Asia, c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has an attractive design, and though the loop is damaged, the rim a little dented and slight damage affects one small part of the design, the seal is in quite good condition.'; (C-16) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 37 x 31 x 14 mm. This is an open work seal, with a V-shaped handle on the back. The design consists of straight parallel sides (or top and bottom) with the other sides going inwards to a diamond shape in the centre. This shape is created with four diagonal lines from the parallel sides crossing in the middle. The seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition.'; (U-40) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 45 x 44 x 13 mm. This has the form of a round disc with handle of inverted U-shape. The design on the face, done in raised lines, is a whirligig: a small central circle with eight lines curving from it to the outer edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is encrusted, but could be cleaned, and there is some damage to the edges, but the design is well preserved.'; (T-457) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 57 x 54 x 18 mm. This is round with a scalloped outer rim. The face is flat, as is the back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a simple cross within a plain outer band, V-shaped struts joining the arms of the cross to the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is a little dented, otherwise the piece is in good condition, the metal having been conserved.'; (T-726) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 50 x 44 x 14 mm. Stamp Seal of Bronze 50 x 44 x 14 mm. This is roughly oval, with scalloped outer edge. The face is flat, as is the back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central square with pinched corners, from the middle of each side of which a channel leads to a looping outer channel surrounding the whole. This comes from west central Asia and date [sic] to c. 2300-2000 B.C. One quarter of the design is missing, otherwise the piece is in good condition, though the outer rim is, as often, worn down.' 297 grams total, 36-56 mm (1 1/2 - 2 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
