Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including nine accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: T-731) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 28 x 26 x 22 mm. This is round with flat face and a back which rises steeply to an oval pierced suspension loop . The design on the face, in raised lines, consists of four L-shapes based on the rim, with a straight line almost from edge to edge through two of them. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. There is some incrustation on the outer surface which could be removed, but save for some wear and chipping of the rim, it is in good condition.'; T-339) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 28.5 x 28.5 x 28 mm. This has a round flat face and convex back which rises to a short stalk handle surmounted by an oval pierced loop. The design on the face is linear, within an outer rim. It shows a central simple cross , each arm joining a spiral which in turn joins other strokes reaching the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, but the metal beneath appears to be in good condition. It is a good example of its kind.'; T-438) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 22 x 24 mm. This has a flat round face and a convex back which rises to a stout stalk handle with superimposed loop. The linear design on the face shows an omega sign above a crescent, and above it several curving strokes. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The handle is worn, and the edges of the face are also worn and a little damaged, but generally the piece is in fair condition.'; T-987) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 33 x 34 x 27 mm. This is a roughly round disc with stalk handle mounted on the back, surmounted by an oval pierced loop. The design on the face, done in raised lines, consists of abstractly placed lines, mostly curving. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. A small piece of the rim is missing, otherwise it is in good condition.'; T-673) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 24 x 25.5 x 26.5 mm. This is a roughly round flat face, and a slightly convex back on which is mounted a stalk handle ending in a ring for suspension. The design of the face is a pattern of raised lines: a swastika in the middle with around it five crescents based on the edge with short straight strokes in the middle of each crescent. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The rim is worn down and the suspension ring also worn, but enough remains to give the design clearly. The metal is in good condition.'; T-186) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 27 x 25 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a stalk handle with oval, pierced top. The design on the face consists of a linear pattern within an outer rim. A bending line divides the circle into two, and each side is filled with a spiral starting from the rim and a V-shaped line. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. It is generally in good condition, though there is damage to some of the raised line of the design.; V-857) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 22 x 31 mm. The face is flat and roughly square, but slightly rounded sides. The back supports a fancy tall handle. The top is in the form of a human fist with fingers clenched, but thumb out, and pierced for suspension. This hand rests on a stalk handle with band of raised lines around it, below which are four shapes (animal claws?) one for each corner of the back of the seal face. The design consists of two bands of the back of the seal face. The design consists of two bands of four lines from the centres of each side, crossing in the middle. This comes from ancient Syria or Anatolia and dates to c. 1000-700 B.C. It is Neo-Hittite in style, an interesting piece in fair condition.'; U-476) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 27 x 25 mm. This has the shape of a human foot, with flat face and back rising as the ankle to an oval pierced loop. The design on the face is a pattern of raised lines with three main items. This comes from west central Asia and is rare for its foot-shape. The piece is in fair condition.'; P-21) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25.5 x 26.5 x 22 mm. This has a flat, round face, and the back has a flat outer edge, within which is a slightly raised level on which rises a stalk handle with horizontal extended loop on the top. The design has a dot in the centre and two short strokes which move from opposite edges toward this dot, but stop short of it. The remaining spaces are filled with the same linear designs tete beche: inverted V-shapes which continue toward the centre with a straight line, which then divided into two curving lines which stop short of forming circles. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is generally in good condition, though the loop has worn edges.' 280 grams total, 20-34mm (3/4 - 1 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
