Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals comprising: one discoid with four-pointed openwork cross design, handle to the reverse; and four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-737) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 43 x 43 x 12mm. This is round with scalloped edges. the face is flat with deep engraving, and the back is also nearly flat with a loop in the centre. the design shows a snake with body intertwined in a circle and head in the centre with jaws wide open. This is repeated on the back as a simple guilloche. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is rare type with the snake's head in the middle, and in very good condition.'; (T-688) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 41 x 39.5 x 16mm. This has the shape of what is depicted, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of two symmetrically placed snakes, with two heads and no tail, the head at each end of the body meeting the other head and forming a loop. Between the two snakes is a band of shapes, seven in all. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design. There is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. The metal underneath appears to be in good condition and there is very little damage.'; (R-495) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45.5 x 38 x 19mm. This has the shape of the items depicted, with flat face and flat back with handle of inverted V-shape mounted on it. The design is compartmented but not open-work and is divided into two compartments, one with three projections, the other with two. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c.2300-2000 B.C. The ends of the projections have slight denting, but otherwise the object is in very good condition. Interpretation of the design is difficult, but each section appears to have one head of an eagle and one set of an eagle's tail feathers, as if two eagles are crossed, but there is still a difficultly with the third head. The design is extremely rare.'; (P-35) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 50 x 50 x 42mm. This has a round face, flat, with flat back, on which a stalk handle is mounted, the top of which is flattened, with two grooves over it, and just below which it is pierced. the design consists of a Greek cross and the quarters so created filled with inverted V shapes. This seal comes from west central Asia or eastern Iran, and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is a large one, and in very good condition.' 206 grams total, 42-59mm (1 3/4-2 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers N 73, P-35, R-495, T-688, T-737, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
