Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals, some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (T-707) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 51 x 17 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a simple cross supported to [sic] struts to the outer band, one on the left side, two on the right side. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition, only the outer rim being a little dented. The metal is in good condition.'; (T-784) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 44 x 43 x 23 mm.This is round with notched outer edge. The face is flat, as is the back, on which is mounted an angular suspension loop. The design is compartmented and consists of a kind of rosette: two concentric circles in the middle, and based on an outer circle. There is some irregularity in the loops and V-shapes. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, and is generally in good condition.'; (T-483) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 42 x 17 mm.This has roughly straight top and bottom, and incurving sides, with flat face, flat back, and a handle on the back of inverted V-shape. The design is linear, the middle set joined in the centre. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a large piece, but is covered with thick incrustation.'; (U-540) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 42 x 42 x 12 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted V-shape is mounted. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a plain outer band within which are four crescent-shaped bands joining it and creating a central shape like a Greek cross with curving sides. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has a less common design and save for denting of the outer rim it is in good condition.'; (R-206) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 47 x 46 x 16 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a cross, the arms of which begin from a central square, and thin as they reach the outer edge. Between the arms of this cross are four crescents supported on struts which also reach the outer edge, which is a simple band of metal. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal is in very good condition and has been conserved. The object is a little dented, and the outer rim is broken at one point, otherwise the object is in good condition.'; (U-349) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 40 x 39 x 12 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a circle of four perching birds within a plain outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design, but the piece is heavily corroded, though this could be treated. The outer rim is worn down.'; (V-785) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 41 x 40 x 15 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted V-shape is mounted. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central small Greek cross joined to the plain outer band by two crescents, one inside the other. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It bears heavy incrustation and the rim is chipped at one point, otherwise it is in fair condition.'; (P-6 ) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 47.5 x 46.5 x 17 mm. This is roughly square, with flat face and back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is both open-work and compartmented. It consists of a central circle within a quadrate cross, within an outer square band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some corrosion on the surface which could be removed, also the outer edges are a little bent, but generally the object is in good condition.' 339 grams total, 32.5-50mm (1 1/4 - 2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
