Lot of 4, including: 1840 Hero of Tippecanoe campaign ribbon, approx. 2.75 x 6.5 in., featuring an oval bust portrait of Harrison with bold text reading, "Major General / William Henry Harrison" above and "Hero of Tippecanoe / Fort Meigs / and Thames," below. Upper portion of ribbon features an illustration of a sailing ship surrounded by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry quotation: "We have met the enemy / and they are ours," and Battle of Lake Erie date. Lower portion of ribbon features an illustration of a log cabin scene. Catalogued in Sullivan and Fischer as [WHH-21a].(2) 1844 Clay and Tariff ribbons, each 3.25 x 7.25 in., featuring a bust portrait of Clay surrounded by an oval oak leaf border on panel inscribed "Henry Clay," with text reading "Clay and Tariff. / The / Democratic Whig / National Convention, / May 2, 1844" above and a verse reading, "The greatÂthe wiseÂthe virtuousÂall they say, / In Time's dread progress, die, and turn to clay! / A dying nation shall the comment give, / She turns to Clay, but turns to Clay to live" below.
