Description

Lot of 18 hand-colored lithographs, each 9.5 x 13.5 in. (sight), framed, 12.5 x 16.25 in. New York, NY: Currier & Ives. Undated, mid-19th century. Half-length portraits of each President from George Washington through Abraham Lincoln. George Washington and James Buchanan are each represented twice. Hand-colored, titled in plate with publisher mark. Most in period wooden frames. Portraits from Washington to Polk bear the imprint used ca 1838-1856, "Lith. & Pub. by N. Currier, 2 Spruce St., NY." Second Washington, Pierce, both Buchanan and Lincoln have the imprint “Lith. & Pub. by N. Currier, 152 Nassau St.” The second Buchanan print is titled “Democratic Candidate for 15th President,” suggesting a date ca 1856. Fillmore bears the address “152 Nassau St. Cor. of Spruce N.Y.” Lincoln bears the imprint, “Published by Currier and Ives”, ca 1860. Imprint not visible on Adams, Madison, and Monroe.Zachary Taylor, though in the same style, is not published by Currier and Ives and was published by D. Needham and lithographed by Kelloggs & Comstock, ca 1848-50.
