A handwritten caption card is dated just the day after Lincoln was interred on May 4. It reads, “Springfield Ills, May 5th 65 / Evergreen from the dais on which rested the remains / of President Lincoln in the Capitol of his own home / & from which they were borne to their last resting place,” suggesting that they were gathered during Lincoln’s Springfield visitation on May 3, 1865.Handsomely framed alongside CDV portraits of Abraham Lincoln, his successor Andrew Johnson, and his murderer John Wilkes Booth as well as an illustration titled Washington & Lincoln (Apotheosis). Notarized letter on verso traces provenance to Anna Dover McKnight (1863-1842) who was gifted them by Springfield, IL family members. ________________________________________________After his assassination on April 14, Lincoln’s body lay in state in the East Room of the White House where private and public viewings were held, his Washington funeral was held on the 19th and he lay in state for another day at the Capitol. On the morning of the 21st, his funeral train began a long procession through seven states, roughly following the path of his journey as president-elect to Washington prior to his first inauguration. The train made stops to massive crowds with elaborate public viewings at Baltimore, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Michigan City (IN), and Chicago before arriving in his adopted hometown of Springfield, Illinois.Upon arriving in Springfield on May 3, Lincoln’s body lay in state in the Illinois Hall of Representatives in the State Capitol. It was in this chamber where Lincoln had given his famous House Divided speech. Reportedly, 75,000 mourners viewed the remains of the fallen president from 10am throughout the night, for a full 24 hours. The coffin was displayed on an elegant catafalque covered in black velvet trimmed in silver and satin and decorated with white flowers and evergreens. According to the caption included, it was at this viewing where the greenery and flower were gathered. The next day, his funeral procession would take the coffin to Oak Ridge Cemetery, a short distance outside the city to be interred in a specially, though hastily, built tomb.
