Description

Souvenir album, 5.75 x 8.5 in., containing 100 silver gelatin photographs, 3.375 x 5.375 in., inserted front/back of each album page and annotated with descriptions and comments. With presentation inscription on front, inside cover, which reads in part, "Presented to Mr. I.P. Baker by Frank Fiske, Photographer. / Being a pictorial record of a trip from Fort Yates, ND, to St. Louis, on The Benton Packet Company's Steamer Scarab rowing three barges as far as Decatur, Neb., and one the rest of the way. The Scarab left Bismarck June 16th 1918 at 1:30 p.m. She arrived St. Louis July 2nd, 7:00 p.m." With additional inscription on back, inside cover, "All views in this book were taken by F.B. Fiske, Fort Yates, ND." The album was presented to Captain Isaac P. Baker (1855-1938), who oversaw the Benton Packet Company in Bismarck, ND, and managed Grant Marsh, the riverboat captain best known for bringing wounded soldiers back from the battlefield at the Little Bighorn in 1876 and for transporting Sitting Bull to the Standing Rock Reservation six years later. The album features several views of the Scarab and boats it passed, as well as river scenes and images of the surrounding landscape, railroad, towns, and historic sites that the riverboat encountered during its trip down the Missouri River. Highlights include buffalo from the herd belonging to Scotty Philip, who was credited with saving the buffalo from extinction; Fort Bennett; Fort Sully; Fort Pierre; Fort Hale; Fort Randall; Fort Omaha, incl. view of balloons in the sky; Yankton Agency; Yankton Ferry; Fort Leavenworth; Floyd's Monument; LeBeau and Forest City, SD; Kansas City, MO; Sioux City, IA; Decatur, NE; and more. Fiske was born in 1883, the son of a military man stationed at Fort Bennett, SD. In 1889 his father was hired on as a civilian wagonmaster at Fort Yates, near the Standing Rock Reservation. As a child, Fiske attended school both at the fort and at the Indian boarding school. For at least part of his boyhood, Fiske spent learning the trade of photography from S.T. "Dick" Fansler, the post photographer. In 1889, when Fiske was a mere boy of 17, he took over the studio. For the next two decades he photographed the residents of Standing Rock. An outstanding album containing photographs by one of the premier photographers of the American West.Â
