Lot of 2, including cartridge casing and rib bone from the Little Bighorn Battlefield, each with note attesting to how the artifact was acquired. A notarized affidavit of provenance and supplemental documents are also included. The cartridge casing is from the collection of Custer historian John M. Carroll, and was acquired by the consignor at a PBA Galleries auction of Carroll's library in the late 1990s. The casing is accompanied by a typed label, which reads: "This spent shell was found on Blummer Ridge, Medicine Tail Coulee, in October 1875 by Keith McDougal. It was a gift from him to me on the 103rd anniversary date of the Custer fight, at the Custer Battlefield, June 25th, 1979 / John M. Carroll Collection." The rib bone, approx. 6 in. long, was picked up by the consignor's grandfather, Samuel E. Johns, when he was a member of an 1889 survey crew laying out a railway route from Custer Station on the Yellowstone River to Sheridan, WY, and is accompanied by a tag inscribed, "From near Custer Battlefield / Found by S.E. Johns July 1889." Also included is a copy of Johns' 30pp typed recollection entitled "A Summer on the Crow Reservation in 1889," written following a trip he took in the late 1930s, during which he revisited the Little Bighorn. Johns recalls his time there in 1889 as the paymaster/quartermaster for the survey of the railroad from Custer Station to Sheridan, WY. The word sketch includes comments about picking up artifacts in 1889 and passing July 4, 1889 at Fort Custer, which was a truly memorable experience. The rib bone descended directly in the family of S.E. Johns.Â
