Scene from the Chinese folk epic "The Journey to the West"
ink/ coloured, on paper, passpartout (yellowed and slightly stained), stamped in picture "15 Nov (19)02 Pekin Chine" at top right, glazed/ framed
The painting shows the monk "Tang Seng", who is accompanied by three persons: the monkey king "Sun Wukong" (one of the most famous mythical creatures in China), "Zhu Bajie" (mixed creature of pig and man) and "Sha Wujing" (a water- or semidemon).
The novel "The Journey to the West", written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty, is one of the four classic novels of Chinese literature.
