Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Fu bats inlaid Zitan drawers box. Chinese valued Zitan wood, constructed unto a unique design of square box elaborately carved on top with swastika interspersed with flying Fu bats, in green color. Each sides with five framed panel, mounted with knob brass handle, all reserved above key fret motif diaper, surmounted the waisted apron terminating the pierced spandrel with scrolling. The word bat Fu, in Chinese sounds identical to the word for luck which is a pair of homophones implied linguistic symbolism the symbolic meaning of bat is commonly recognized as good fortune in Chinese culture and meaning the five blessings, is a concept that signify a grouping of certain good fortunes and luck in Chinese culture. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this box a captivating appearance. The carving is superb, smooth surface, with feathery fine grain.
