Superb, Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Chongzhen blue and white dragon pattern porcelain plate. Finest porcelain potted in slightly deep shallow vessel form, with broad wide central interior, rounded cavetto gently tapering to open wide, a slightly flared lip and raised with big round shallow concave foot base. All reserved in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt fine blue color. Blue and white porcelain in Chinese it is called Qing Hua Ci. It is the most important variety of China’s porcelain. It was originated in the Yuan Dynasty. Its color does not easily fade and durability is longer. It used cobaltous oxide as the colorant. Patterns were directly painted onto the inner body and burnt after glaze was applied on it. The center interior delicately fine depicted five claws imperial dragon soaring amidst flames and vapors, with face and upper right appendage outstretched toward the heavens. Vigorous dragons chasing flaming pearl amidst flames against cobalt blue scrolling clouds diaper. The backdrop depicts swirling wind and fire painted atop a beautiful white underglaze, enclosed with triple fine blue rings. The outer interior rim decorated with thrashing Lishui wavy water among rocky hill mountain, enclosed with double fine blue rings. The upper exterior mouth rim festooned with snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds above thrashing Li-Shui waves in a cobalt blue color dragon squama rounded the plate to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames, enclosed with double fine blue rings. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-Shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the underglaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the base left unglazed with grayish creme-brown ground and dark spots of firing marks. The porcelain conformed all required specimen to be high valued Chinese porcelain wares, with finest material, the whiteness, the glaze, and the carving. Without overlap the outlines of the design, well carved, clear, subtle, distinct, and the shape is uniformly proportioned. The Under-base bears a reign mark, a vertical eight underglaze blue script characters reign mark, enclosed within double fine blue rings, Chongzhen Reign Period of The Great Ming Dynasty.
