Christine Latty (1899-1981), was bron in an eminent family in New York. She started to collect Asian Art since 1930s then extended to Western Art at late 1940s, among which the Chinese Porcelain and Art were the most important. In Ms. Latty's NYC elegant house, Chinese furniture, porcelain, painting and Japanese screen, Britain furniture, European Decorates display unique and harmonious beauty. She chased prefect of collection and never followed trends. Her collection was mostly impacted by her interests in history, esthetics and academics. Ms. Latty enjoy being together with artworks and antiques in every day living. Chairs were for being seated, tables were for puting things on and cabinets were for storing stuffs like antiques or Christmas decorates. The value of collection is no only for property investment but also to understand the culture and art. Ms. Latty mentioned times to public that her art initiation and collection interests was from a Sweden scholar, Osvrld Siren (1879-1966) when he was invited to give lectures in Yale university in 1917 and she was one of the students. In 1940 Ms. Latty was invited to attended the exhibition of Chinese Ancient Bronzes in sweden under Mr. Siren's reference. In early 1950s, Ms. Latty worked to rebuild department of public health in Tokyo Japan when she acquired many sources of Chinese antiques with assoication of Howard Hollis and Sherman Lee. She traveled to and fro New York, Tokyo, Koyto and Osaka to seek high quality Chinese antiques. Her collection were exhibited many time in State mesuems and made great contribution to spread Eastern Antique and Art.We put around 70 pieces of Ms. Latty's collection in this sale, including artworks, porcelain, furniture, stone buddha, embroidery. Some collection came from Japan Yamanaka & Co. Ltd, Eminent monk Maeda in Meiji era and some artworks Master Huang Binhong gifted to Mr. Osvrld Siren. Some togerther with reference books which published in early Showa era. Osvrld Siren was born in Helsinki. He held the J.A. Berg Professorship of the History and Theory of Art at the University of Stockholm 1908-1923 and was Keeper of painting and sculpture at Nationalmuseum 1928-1945. He died in Stockholm at aged 87. In the area of Chinese art, his major books include Gardens of China (1949), A History of Early Chinese Art (1929), Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century; over 900 Specimens in Stone, Bronze, Lacquer and Wood, Principally from Northern China (1925), Chinese Painting: Leading Masters and Principles(1956), and The Walls and Gates of Peking(1924). He visited China six times since 1920. He companyed last emper Puyi to take photos of the Forbidden City and made friendship with Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Yuanji, Huang Binhong and Wanyan Hengyong. Siren was an early member of the theosophist movement. In 1956, he was awarded the Charles Lang Freer Medal. 克里斯汀.兰迪(1899-1981)兰迪夫人生于美国纽约,家族地位显赫,于20世纪30年代开始醉心于艺术收藏。40年代后期,收藏范畴扩展至中外古董精品,其中尤为重要的是中国书画瓷器的收藏。在兰迪夫人位于纽约的雅致宅邸内,可见到中式家具,瓷器,书画与日本屏风、英式家具以及欧洲装饰艺术品共冶一室的画面,展现出独特的和谐美感。她是一位“臻于完美”的藏家,“她从来都不轻易跟随潮流”,其收藏总是与她对学术的兴趣,对历史的探究和美的热爱紧紧相连。对于兰迪夫人来说,与这些艺术品朝夕相对,他们生活其中,并怡然处之:椅子是用来坐的,桌子是用来放东西的,储藏柜是用来收纳各种物品的,从古董到圣诞节装饰都包括在其中。收藏的价值不仅是昭示一份可观的资产配置,更重要的是在朝夕相伴间,领悟其中承载的文化魅力,在其滋养中艺术着自己的生活。兰迪夫人在公开场合不止一次谈起,她对艺术品的启蒙来自一位瑞典学者--喜龙仁(Osvrld Siren 1879--1966)(图四),他们结识于1917年美国耶鲁大学,当时喜龙仁先生受邀在耶鲁大学讲学,兰迪夫人便是其学生之一。自此她受喜龙仁影响,对东方美术产生浓厚的兴趣。1940年,瑞典国家博物馆举办“中国青铜器展览”,并邀请各国五十名学者参加,得到喜龙仁先生的推荐,兰迪夫人也在受邀之列。(见图一)上世纪五十年代初,兰迪夫人工作需要,在日本东京参与“公共卫生部门”的建立,(见图二 图三)期间发现日本有大量中国古代艺术品存留,并结识了东京文化遗产和文物史迹部门的艺术史学者,如“虎力士(Howard Hollis)”和李雪曼(Sherman Lee)等人,为其收藏艺术品积累了便利条件。五六十年代,为了搜寻高档的中国文物,经常往返穿梭于纽约,东京大阪京都地区,其所藏大量品级上乘的艺术品多次借展美各大州立博物馆展览, 对东方古美术文化的传播起到了极大的贡献。 本次拍卖共征集拍品70件,涉及中国古代及近代书画,瓷器,家具,佛像,刺绣等诸多门类,其中包含日本山中商会旧藏,明治时期高僧前田慧云珍藏一些藏品以及黄宾虹赠与喜龙仁的山水作品(见图三)。部分拍品附有日本昭和早期出版(见图四)可供参考,实为一场难得的艺术品饕餮盛宴! *瑞典著名艺术史学者喜龙仁(Osvald Siren,1879-1966)(图四)为20世纪西方极为重要的中国美术史专家,首届查尔斯兰弗利尔奖章获得者,曾担任瑞典斯德哥尔摩大学艺术史教授、瑞典国家博物馆绘画与雕塑部主任馆员等职。1916年起,他先后赴美国耶鲁大学、哈佛大学和日本的诸多名校讲学。1920年起六次来华,曾在末代皇帝溥仪陪同下拍摄故宫,对中国古代建筑、雕塑、绘画艺术研究极深,代表作有《北京的城墙和城门》(1924)、《中国雕塑》(1925)、《中国北京皇城写真全图》(1926)、《中国早期艺术史》(1929)、《中国绘画史》(1929—1930)、《中国园林》(1949)等。在华期间,喜龙仁先生和蔡元培,张元济,黄宾虹,完颜衡永等人结交了深厚的友谊。对于20世纪上半期中国艺术知识在西方的传播起到了重要作用。日本《岩波西洋人名辞典》增补版(1981)称其为第二次世界大战后西方中国绘画研究的集大成者。
