Bronze, two adorants missingBirma, 17th / 18th centuryDimensions: Height: 39 cm / Wide: 20 cm / Depth: 11 cmWeight: 3638 gramsBuddha Shakyamuni sitting on a high lotus throne on a circular plinth. The surface he is sitting on is rounded like a hill. The back of the throne is flattened while the back of the Buddha is executed completely. Two adorants are missing, probably formerly standing on the two attached stilts in the front. The Buddha is dressed in a robe thrown over his left shoulder. His face is smiling gently, the eyes are downcast but slightly open. A small vase decorates the top of his ushnisha. The mudra here means "calling the earth to witness" or "touching the earth". When Buddha was meditating underneath the bodhi tree, the demon mara tried to distract Buddha but he called the earth to witness his enlightenment and the demon vanished.
