道教三十六天将源自于汉族先民对北斗星的崇拜，因此，又称呼其为三十六天罡。按道教经典记载，天罡神负责保护天宫和众仙的安全，在术法和武功上都有相当的造诣，故道教在斋坛作法时，常召请天将下界驱邪，此六尊神像就表现了六位天罡神的威猛形象。六位神灵皆着传统汉式服饰，或头戴方帽，或发髻高挽，神色各异，表情寂忿，身形多变，姿态灵动，手中持有各种法器，为其形象标志。脚蹬汉靴，站立于台座之上。整像胎体厚重，包浆醇厚，人物造型生动写实，艺术特点带有鲜明明代汉地造像的艺术特征。更兼保存完好，为供奉及收藏的绝佳之作。
