STYLE
It is oval in shape with a clawed amethyst kitten in the centre, each punctuated by a pink-cut diamond. The frame is enamelled in polychrome cloisonné also enhanced with pink cut diamonds. Border of small fine pearls and a square pendant in pampille. The reverse side is finely engraved with arabesques and foliage. Gross weight: 15,93

The origin of Holbeine jewellery is discussed by Geoffrey Munn in his book entitled "Castellani and Guiliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th century" (1983, p.165 ff). It appears that pendants of this type appeared in London around 1865 and were offered to a rich clientele by such prestigious jewellers as Hancock, Robert Phillips, John Brogden and Carlo Guiliano. This style is obviously related to the pre-raphaelist aesthetic that spread in England after 1850. (ref: Fabian
