砚为歙石所制，砚石细腻，圆砚仿汉晋铜镜式样，做八棱状，砚面打磨为砚堂，呈圆形，周寰凹下成渠，以为墨池，中间为圆形砚冈，砚唇浮雕与侧壁一致，以海水波浪纹为地，唇上为飞鱼海马纹，侧壁高浮雕四灵（青龙、白虎、朱雀、玄武），并以饕餮兽面为四足，纹饰繁复，刻工细腻，将上古神话与天罡八方融入一小小砚身，实为难得。再观砚石本身，细密坚润，纹理缜密，石内有暗细罗纹，纹理均匀，隐而不露，具备此特征之砚石，一般发墨极佳，且石质软硬均匀，便于发墨，材佳工美，实为文房案头逸品。配硬木砚盖、底。来源：天津文物
