炉体适中，形制规整，敦厚中见大气。薄口外侈，折沿，束颈，鼓腹下垂，重心集中于下半部，入手沉坠，为晚明至清早典型风格。器身两侧塑天鸡耳，高出器身，立体饱满，铸刻精细，一丝不苟；足底浮雕螭龙，威武大气。炉身栗殻皮色，抚之绵腻，不盘自润。据《宣德彝器图谱》卷十，天鸡炉在皇后、嫔妃等宫殿中皆有。天鸡是古代传说中的神鸟，南朝梁人任昉《述异记》卷下：「东南有桃都山，上有大树……上有天鸡，日初出，照此木，天鸡则鸣，天下鸡皆随之鸣。」又《宣炉小志》载：「天鸡即火鸡也，能吞火，会意象形故以铸炉……」，采用天鸡造型是取其神威以保平安之意。
