Scarce, c. 1854, with Crystal Palace and Daguerreian Gallery. This is a scarce Union case with original daguerreotype image within, produced c. 1854 by S. Peck & Co., the creator of the Union case, which were made from a shellac and wood fiber thermoplastic which Peck named Union. The elaborate exterior case design shows a young woman next to a display of daguerreotype cases. Behind her is the New York Crystal Palace, built in 1853 at the present site of the New York Public Library. The interior has a panel of purple velvet to the reverse of the daguerreotype, which is presented in a gilt metal frame with profuse floral decoration. At top is a rose window, and at bottom are flags, banners and the word LIBERTY. These complex trappings recall motifs employed at the International Exhibition of Arts and Industry, 1853-1854. Featured in the 1988 book UNION CASES A COLLECTORS GUIDE, includes original listing from book. Cover hinges missing. Issued: c. 1854 Dimensions: 4"H x 3.5"W Manufacturer: Samuel Peck & Co.
