Attributed to Joseph Highmore (British, 1692-1780) oil on canvas three quarter length portrait of a young lady attired in a white 18th century dress with yellow sash and jeweled belt, seated with her left arm resting on a book and left hand holding a flower against a red draped background. Unsigned. Inscription en verso center stretcher reads, "E. Holmes of the City of Bristol, widow, and Aunt of Jane Jenkyns, 1788". Note: inscription is believed to have been added later, possibly by someone mistakenly copying what was on the canvas prior to relining). Subject may be Elizabeth Burrett Holmes, who married Samuel Holmes in Bristol, England, in 1747. (source: Ancestry.com). Housed in a 20th century molded gilt wood frame with a 20th century brass placard reading "Joseph Highmore/1788" (again, the 1788 date is likely incorrect, as Joseph Highmore is believed to have died by 1780). Circa 1750s. Sight - 49 1/4" H x 39 1/2" W. Framed - 57" H x 47 1/4" W.
