MUNTING (Abraham). PHYTOGRAPHIA CURIOSA, exibeus arborum, fruticum, herbarum, florum iconas. Amsterdam, Leide, Francis Halman, Pierre Vander Aa, 1702. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-folio of [32]-24 and [4]-25 to 47 pages, brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, spine gilt (contemporary binding). ONE OF THE MOST DECORATIVE HERBARIUMS OF THE XVII° CENTURY. This is the first Latin edition, (the first in Dutch in 1696); it is illustrated with an allegorical title-frontispiece, in baroque style and repeated at the head of the second part, engraved by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, with a dedication plate to the arms of Benjamin Fagelio, and 245 VERY BEAUTIFUL engraved plates remarkable for their originality and elegance. All of them are placed in small, classic country or mountainous landscapes and give the effect that the plants are much larger than life; huge oranges like pumpkins, cyclamen floating lightly in the air, geraniums that have become giant trees. The text pages contain the name of each plant, translated into English, Dutch and sometimes French. Small clear halo in the margins of some leaves, the binding worn with a small lack on a flat. Contemporary handwritten annotations. (Pritzel, 6555).
