Albert Paley (American, b.1944) Abstract metal pedestal coffee / occasional side table with glass top. Features a black abstract pedestal form with forged and fabricated twisted knot like metal work. Signed Paley and dated 1984 on base. Base measures 20 1/2" x 19" with a 32" diameter, 3/4" thick glass top. Provenance: From the Richard and Ruth Shack collection. Acquired directly from the artist in 1984. Richard Shack was a talent agent and was also on the Print Acquisition Committee at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA, in NYC). Ruth was a Dade County Commissioner for many years, very active in the political and cultural development of South Florida, and, later, the President and CEO of the Miami Foundation. They began collecting in the 1960s, and were personal friends of all the artists they collected--and that included pretty much every important artist in America in the 1970s and 1980s (Rauschenberg, Rosenquist, Johns, Close, Motherwell, Rivers, etc, etc.). They also introduced Australian Aboriginal art to Miami, as well as the art of South Africa. They were one of the first collectors of William Kentridge in America. And, they were also active supporters of local artists, and were instrumental in the founding of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in North Miami, and the Miami Beach Center for the Arts (now Oolite Arts). .
