Pennsylvania,1839-1915 James Brade Sword Impressionist landscape of the vast greenery Martha's Vineyard offers, catching clouds rolling across an evening sky. With lack of large buildings and only a simple fence cutting across the view, Sword highlights the natural beauty of the Island. Starting in 1861, Sword began studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art alongside George Washington Nicholson, a notable landscape and Maritime painter, under the guidance of Christian Schusele. Schusele was a portrait and history painter attributed to the development of the Pennsylvania Academy, supporting Sword in pursuing painting. Later Sword was elected President of the Philadelphia Society of Artists in 1878, and Director of the Art Club of Philadelphia in 1887. Oil on canvas,Canvas 18" x 30",Frame 23" x 35" Signed "J. B.
