A large Chinese Song Dynasty Glazed Martaban Jar (Ex. Sotheby's). The jar is made from a reddish stoneware, coated in a greenish slip on top of which is a dark brown glaze. Around the shoulder, and to the upper body, are several ridges. Provenance: Above the base there is a museum or collection number "DRI WA/1412/A". This jar was sold as part of the "Stanley J Seeger Collection" sale at Sotheby's London in December 2002. Since then it has been part of a private Sussex collection. Reference: an almost identical example attributed to the Song Dynasty is illustrated and described in the 1974 William Sorsby Ltd. book "South-East Asian and Early Chinese Export Ceramics". Height 55cm (21.5 inches), diameter 45cm (17.75 inches).
