Description

Master of the Lazzaroni Madonna Triptych of the Madonna with Child Tempera on panel. 33 x 14.5 cm (central panel) 33 x 8 cm (side panels). Provenance Private ownership, South Germany. Literature Cited literature: Miklós Boskovits, Pittura fiorentina alla vigilia del Rinascimento 1370-1400, Firenze 1975, p. 128, 239 note. 169. The present work can be assigned to the œuvre of an anonymous painter known as the Master of the Madonna Lazzaroni. This minor master was a former pupil of Jacopo di Cione, and was active in the region around Florence. Richard Offner was the first to group together works to form his œuvre, and Miklos Boskovits continued to add to this group in 1975. The Florentine painter, who derives his notname from an image of the Virgin formerly housed in the Lazzaroni Collection in Paris, appears to have remained heavily influenced by Jacopo di Cione at the beginning of his career before orientating himself more towards the works of painters such as Andra di Bonaiuti and Cenni di Francesco later on. He painted the frescoes in the Palazzo Comunale di San Miniato in Pisa, dated 1395, together with the latter artist. This small altarpiece with its ornamental drapery can be dated to around 1380. It is comparable to other works attributed to this painter, such as the triptych in the Fondazione Cini in Venice, and the panels in the Crespi Collection (Museo Diocesano) in Milan. We would like to thank Gaudenz Freuler for his kind support in cataloguing this work.
