A Grand Tour fragmentary serpentine marble figure group of the Abduction of Persephone by Pluto, 19th century, 41cm high Note: There is a work by Francois Girardon (1628-1715) of the same subject matter from which this group may have been influenced as a Grand tour souvenir. The Abduction of Proserpine by Girardon was originally conceived as part of a commission for four marble groups of allegorical subject matter of the four elements in 1674. Commissioned by Jean-Baptiste Colbert on behalf of Louis XIV, most of the details, from the conception and preliminary drawings were left to the King's first painter, Charles Le Brun.
