Mid-18th century important political wine glass, the rounded funnel bowl above a plain stem and folded foot, the bowl with diamond point engraved "Our Liberty preserved by Taylor", 15cm high. Note: purchased Christies, February 1995 Lot 126, the engraving is possibly a reference to Joseph Taylor who served as MP for Ashburton from 1739-41, the engraving done in the style of the so-called "calligraphic master" as recorded in Charleston's article in the Burlington Magazine May 1994, which lists a further 13 glasses by the same engraver dating to the 1720s
