:Anonymous sale in Prato, 12 April 2013 (Casa d'Arte Farsetti), n°370 (as attributed to Gherardini).
The Zeri Photo Library lists the same composition given to Alessandro Gherardini, in rectangular format and of similar height (87 cm). We are not in a position to know whether this is our painting in the modified
format.
Alessandro Gherardini was the most sought-after artist in Tuscany around 1700, working for Ferdinand de Medici, creating religious paintings and secular frescoes for numerous palaces (Palazzo Corsini). Trained in the cultivated and refined tradition of Alessandro Rosi and Livio Mehus, he adopted the clear and chromatic baroque style that Luca Girodano brought to Florence.
