A gilt-bronze statue depicting an Usnisa Vijaya, dating from the Yongle Period of the Ming dynasty. The eleven-headed eight-armed goddess stands atop a circular lotus base with incised borders, the eight arms raised. The eleven faces are exquisitely detailed in a meditative expression with eyes cast down, framed by long pendulous ears and crowned by jeweled tiaras surrounding a high chignon. Her main pair of hands is held in anjali mudra, the gesture of salutation; the other hands are held in kartari, karana, and varada, wearing an elaborate necklace and bejeweled bangles and holding various sacred Buddhist objects. Ming dynasty Yongle mark incised in the front of the lotus base. Dimensions are: 8 1/8 inches tall X 4 1/4 inches wide; 20.6 cm tall X 10.8 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Overall good condition with a small dent to one hand. Provenance: From a collection in Southern California. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a Yongle-period gilt-brass statue of Manjushri in its collection, accession number 2001.59 (fig.1). Sotheby's Hong Kong sold a gilt-bronze figure of Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara dating from the Yongle period on May 30-31, 2019, lot 619.
