Taisho is Japan’s Jazz Age. It often is: ero guro nansensu — eroticism, grotesquerie, nonsense. The design of this kimono, which dates from the 1920s, has composed an entire metaphoric floating world depicting scenes of “The Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter” across the surface of the garment; being created with a stencil and -hand resist-dyeing technique. The Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter was the sole licensed red-light district in the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo). Mic, food, and drink were all on offer, but prostitutes were the star attractions of this btling city within a city. During Japan’s Edo period the phrase "the floating world" evoked an imagined universe of wit, stylishness, and extravagance—with overtones of naughtiness, hedonism, and transgression. The pastel colors of this design were very popular in the Taisho era. It is a highly sophisticated garment, yet slim and western-style. Plain weave silk crepe, with stenciled and hand resist-dyeing (yuzen) and embroidery in silk thread, lined with plain weave, red silk. Lined with red silk in half of front panels, three-quarters of back panels and sleeve interior.
