A fine stoneware faceted lidded bowl with rope and slip inlay by Tatsuzo Shimaoka, with signed box, 1960-70s. 6" x 6" x 4.5 Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919-2007), was the leading disciple and student of Shoji Hamada (1894-1978), whom he succeeded as the preeminent potter of Mashiko, the ceramic-producing town northeast of Tokyo. Shimaoka, like Hamada before him, was well known outside Japan as well as within, and in 1996 was appointed a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government.
