Moriage ware, like Satsuma has raised designs on the surface of the pottery/stoneware base. In Satsuma ware, the raised design is often thin and often of gold. In Moriage ware, the raised design is most likely slip, a mixture of the same clay that created the pot, thin enough to apply, with coloration and glaze over that. The raised design is much thicker. Morige is a process, not a manufacturer, and there are varying qualities, mainly in the care and precision of the decoration, its complexity, and its ambition. This piece is unique in the hignly raised sculpture of the warrior on horseback on one side of the vase. The head of the warrior stands out from the vase almost an inch, and the horse head (its thickest part) and the warrior's leg about half an inch. I am not an expert but my wife had an antiques store for 25 years and she liked and carried old pieces of it. I have never seen a similar piece to this. Very impressive. Almost 20" high and about 12" at its widest. The other side of the vase is not as unual but is equally impressive with the large irises. Excellent workmanship on this piece. both on the main 'pictures' and the surrounding decorative background. E76-0021
