This carving of a man doing a handstand on top of a frog isreally amazing. The creativity of carving in this fine detail is reallysomething to behold. Acquired in one of several boxes from an estate sale of afamily that had spent many years in post-war Japan and the far east returningto the in the 1980’s My research has been unable to conclively verify if thiswas an early work of the master carver, Masatani of the Japanese Meiji Period. However, there are identical works to this this one that are attributed to Masatani. Itis unsigned and a little rough around the edges. Please note photos for moredetails. At one time this carving would have been standing. But the lossof part of his tail doesn’t permit standing. The wood is solid and in goodshape, while the finish could e some touch up. It is presented as is. We havenot done anything in the way of cleaning or restoring. Will leave that to thenew owner. The carving is approximately 4.5’’ inches high by 1.75’’ inches wide.
