John Bentham Dinsdale (British, 1927-2008) 'The Osprey and Egyptienne, 23rd March 1904' signed 'John Bentham-Dinsdale' (lower left), signed and titled (on canvas verso) oil on canvas 75.9 x 101.3cm (29 7/8 x 39 7/8in). Footnotes: This work depicts the engagement off Barbados between HMS Osprey and the French privateer Egyptienne. Having spotted four French ships cruising in the area, Osprey embarked on a great chase which culminated in the engagement shown here. The other three ships escaped, whilst Egyptienne received a pounding from Osprey's guns. However, the French privateer still managed to flee the combat and Osprey was unsuccessful in chasing her down. Three days later, Egyptienne was spotted by HMS Hippomenes. A two day chased followed, culminating in several hours of combat before Egyptienne and her crew surrendered. She would go on to become the British prison ship Antigua This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR P AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.
