A Mongol gold dinar of a type struck during the reign of Genghis Khan (AD 1206-1227) and posthumously Dihistan, dated AH 639/ AD 1241-1242 with four lines of inscription in kufic ornamented with vegetal motifs surrounded by a band of inscription in kufic to each side, anonymous, practically mint state 28 mm. approx.; 4.58 g. Footnotes: See Stephen Album, Checklist of Islamic Coins, Santa Rosa, 2011, no. 1966. Inscriptions: a part from the shahadah and titles al-qa'an and al-'adil al-a'zam. The coinage of the Great Mongols is generally of crude manufacture, functional but without care in its striking. The boldness of the calligraphy however provides the coins with an impressive feel reflecting their raw power. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
