Theodore Robinson (American, 1851-1896) Moyen-Age Oil on canvas 10 x 14 in. (25.4 x 35.6cm) Executed circa 1893. PROVENANCE: The Artist. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Virginia. NOTE: Theodore Robinson returned to France, specifically Giverny, in May 1889 after a brief visit to the United States. That spring, he produced Moyen-Age, a small watercolor which John Baur described as "another throw-back to his decorative work." The present work was executed four years later, this time in oil. In both compositions, a woman dressed in a long red dress and hood is leaning with a certain grace to pick up a flower in the meadow where she is sitting. The work shows a certain reverence toward literary themes, especially that of chivalric romance - which experienced a renewed interest at the time. The artist seldom indulged in such imaginary themes thereafter, focusing instead on landscape painting. See More
