(40.6 x 50.8cm) PROVENANCE: The Estate of the Artist, Springfield, Pennsylvania. note: "The period of much of my father's actual active life as an artist was rich with art calling attention to issues of social justice. But, although my parents were both liberal politically, this didn't inform their personal art. More a matter of "art for art's sake" as some say. In my father's case I think it had to do with personal expression, and was based on things he saw that interested him in his environment. He admired the work of other artists at different times in his life, and was influenced by them, I'm sure, but still made his work his own. His personal expression seemed to result in a certain mood in his work that I can't really put into words very well, of a pensive, somewhat remote, observer of life, as opposed to being actively in the thick of things. In person, socially, he did have that quality of observer.
