Exhibited: Contemporary American Art at the New York World's Fair, 1939. note: "Colorado Castle and High in the Rockies were painted during a reconnaissance trip my father took out west for several months, while my mother (Ann) and my baby brother and I stayed with her aunt in Lawrence, Kansas. Their artist friends Edgar and Margaret Britton had moved to Colorado several years earlier, and my parents were contemplating moving west as well. John went to Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, scoping out the livability and teaching positions, but nothing panned out. He then was offered a spring semester teaching position at Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas, so we stayed in Lawrence until moving east to the Philadelphia area." - Diane Winters, the artist's daughter
